   Many people have "healthy eating" as a goal, but what does that mean? Eating healthier can mean any number of things, and usually something different to everyone.

   Recently, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services shocked parents around the country when they issued new guidelines regarding children and cholesterol. Their recommendations, joined by those of The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, outline guidelines that suggest all children between the ages of 9 and 11 should have their cholesterol levels checked.

January 4 Innovations in Smoking Cessation - 

Wednesday, January 4 at 6 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Vasu Malepati, M.D., an ear, nose and throat specialist on staff at MVH, will discuss smoking cessation. This program is part of MVH's Innovations series featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC Offers Weekly Exercise Class for Those Who Need to Move More 

Bariatric group exercise class at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC on Fridays, beginning January 6 thru April 2012 from 6-7 p.m. The class emphasizes improving health through moving more and consists of low impact cardio as well as balance and strengthening routines designed for each participant by a personal trainer. Each one will include a brief group discussion concerning healthful lifestyles and goal-setting. Classes are sponsored by the Bariatric Lifestyle Program at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

Smoke Free for Life

Registration required

Location: Education Classroom #1, Second Floor, St. Clair Hospital

Time: 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm Cost: "$60"

Smoke Free for Life is a quit smoking program for adults that is designed to help you quit and to stay quit.  Over the series of eight classes (1 1/2 hours in length), the participant will learn how to make a personal quit plan and prepare for quit day.  Ways to keep your motivation high and your goal in sight are stressed.  Other topics addressed are weight control, stress and the art of positive self-talk. Once you quit, the classes will provide strategies and tools to help you stay smoke free. Pine Center, Wexford: Monday, Jan. 9, 7-8:30 p.m.. Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is offering fall classes for children and adults at several locations throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. The Social and Emotional Development of Infants and Toddlers: 

How to Survive Challenges and Emerge the Winner

This parent workshop hosted by accessAbilities will be held at the Indiana Area Head Start Center, 155 North Clymer Avenue, Indiana, PA  15701.  Registration starts at 4:45 p.m. and sessions will start at 5:00 p.m. and last for 1 1/2 hours.  Free child care and refreshments will be available.  Registration is limited to the first 15 parents. Learn to Eat Well for Your Health

Is one of your New Year's Resolutions for 2012 to eat better for your health, for more energy, or to lose weight? Sample delicious foods to help you on your mission at Fabulous Recipes for Vibrant Health on Thursday, January 12, at 7 p.m. at the Peters Township Public Library. There is a $10 program fee for the plentiful food samples. Register at the library circulation desk. Presenting the program will be Janet McKee, Board Certified Holistic Health Counselor and certified member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners.

Understanding Emotional Eating

Licensed clinical social worker Elizabeth Babcock, MSW, LCSW, BCD, will present an Understanding Emotional Eating program at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18 in the McNary Conference Center at Canonsburg General Hospital. In this seminar, participants will explore why most people struggle with unhealthy urges to eat and why diets predictably fail (it's the diets, not you). Whether you come to participate or simply listen, this information will help you understand why you're stuck where you are, and what you can start doing right now to begin building the relationship you want with food. Mothers and Daughters - Growing and Changing

Cost: $40 per class, $60 for both Growing and Changing & Healthy Body Image

Designed for girls ages 9 to 11 and their mothers, the Growing and Changing program centers on the physical changes that accompany the onset of puberty. Topics include female anatomy, reproductive development, menstruation and healthy lifestyle habits, with a focus on open communication between mothers and daughters. The Washington Hospital Breastfeeding Support Group

For pregnant women, mothers who are currently breastfeeding, fathers and siblings. Last Monday each month (except December) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Community Room The Washington Hospital. Register by calling (724) 250-4476.

Introduction to Breastfeeding

Registration required

Location: Community Ed. Classroom, 5th Floor, St. Clair Hospital

Time: 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Cost: $40 per person or $50 per couple

Led by a lactation consultant, Introduction to Breastfeeding is designed to facilitate a woman's choice to breastfeed. The "why and how" of breastfeeding are discussed, along with emphasis on positioning baby, latching on, breast care, the father's role, returning to work and breastfeeding challenges. Participants are given the opportunity to ask questions, as well as view breast pumps, nursing bras and additional nursing accessories. Classes offered monthly. Ski/Sporting Clays Fundraiser for Blind & Vision 

Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh

Diann Roffe, an Olympic gold medalist in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, and a world champion ski competitor, will be featured at the 2012 Corporate Cup Ski Race and Sporting Clays to benefit Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh (BVRS) on Friday, February 10 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs during January. Many of the events will be held in the Hospital's Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.

 

January 4, 11, 18, 25

Childbirth Preparation Class - Wednesday, January 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. A four-week series of prenatal education classes designed to prepare couples for the birthing process. Topics include: signs of labor, vaginal and c-section deliveries, role of the labor coach, comfort measures including breathing and relaxation skills and pain medication options. Couples will rehearse what they learn in class to help relieve anxiety surrounding the birthing experience. Classes are free to Valley Women's Health patients and a small fee applies to non-patients. Stroke Support Group - Thursday, January 5 at 1 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the challenges and struggles they face on a daily basis dealing with stroke and it's after effects. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, January 10 at 11 a.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.

Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, January 10 - 12 from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m., ECC. A three-day, two-hour-per-day education series that focuses on diabetes self-management and care. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of classes. Arthritis Support Group - Wednesday, January 18 at 1 p.m., ECC. The Arthritis Support Group is free and open to all persons with arthritis or related illnesses and their families. For more information, call 724-258-1321.

Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, January 18 from 9 - 11 a.m., ECC. Diabetes self-management class that focuses on carb counting with everything you need to know. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Completion of the three-day Diabetes Self-Management Training is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. January 24-26

Breastfeeding Class - Monday, January 30 from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. at the Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while in the hospital after delivery and when returning home. Many props are used in this class including breast pumps. Partners and grandmothers are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, call 724-258-BABY (2229).

 

January 31

Adult CPR Instruction - Tuesday, January 31 from 6 - 9 p.m. Adult CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) classes are offered by the hospital in conjunction with Valley Health and Safety Training Center (VHSTC). The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required at 724-684-9536.
